7 Reasons Why People Fail in Life

inspiration“Only those who dare to fail greatly can ever achieve greatly.” Robert F Kennedy

If you find yourself up against the same problems and issues today which you were facing years ago, it may be the right time to start looking at things differently. Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over again while expecting different results.

Being successful is very simple. Just model others who are successful. Talk like they talk, do what they do, and most importantly think like they think. Focus on less, but only on that which is more important to you, whatever that may be.

There are certain areas which are equally important to the well being of every human when it comes to success and happiness. These areas are spiritual fulfillment, vibrant physical health, nurturing relationships, and financial wealth.

There are many reasons why people fail to attain the state known as success, or even happiness. Below are seven of the most common reasons in my opinion.

Not Knowing What They Want
The number one reason why people are unsuccessful or unhappy is because they do not know what they want out of life. You see, life is a like a blank canvas. It is up to each individual to pick the colors they wish to paint and draw any picture they please. If a person does not choose to pick their colors or picture to paint, they can be certain that someone else who does know what they want will pick it for them.

When going into any situation, whether it is as simple as a phone call, or as complex as an entire lifetime, knowing what you want is essential to getting what you want. It is the destination which we must have in mind clearly prior to starting any journey.

Not Doing What They Know
Knowledge and action are worlds apart. Just because you know that you need to eat healthy and exercise regularly in order to attain vibrant health does not mean that you will do it.

In my personal opinion, the only reason why people do what they know is because of an intense desire to gain what they are after. If there is a strong emotional need to become healthier, richer, happier, or whatever else, there is nothing in the world which can stop a human will to achieve these ideals.

Not Associating With The Right People
Simply said, you will eventually become who your friends are. Either they will become like you, or you like them. It is plain, yet profoundly true. It is also a fact that your earnings will be within 20% or so of the average earnings of your five closest friends. Don’t believe me? Do the rough math in your own head for your own situation and you are certainly in for a shocker.

The people who we surround ourselves with immensely affect how we think. We borrow not only their thoughts and ideologies, but also their manners and habits. Associate yourself with positive, successful people and you are certain to become one as well.

Not learning and Educating Further
Tom Hopkins, a Real Estate genius put it this way; “No one limits your growth but you. If you want to earn more, learn more.” Further educating yourself in the areas which you deem important and worthwhile is an absolute necessity to just earning more but also advancing your life further as a whole.

Want to learn more? Walk into a Borders or Barnes & Noble and you are certain to find more books on the areas of your interest that you can possibly read in the next year. There is also a tremendous amount of free information available of the Internet on any subject you can think of. Use this information to learn more and constantly grow yourself.

Doing What Everyone Else Is Doing
If you do what everyone else is doing, you are going to have what everyone else has. This may not be a bad thing, however if you are not wanting to settle for what everyone else has, than be ready to take action differently. Most adults go out and get a college degree, or not even that, they work different jobs for 30-40 years, and are dependent upon the government or others to take care of them in their later years.

If you do not want that for yourself, you have got to get away from the weekly paycheck trap. It is a total hamster wheel. You may be working very hard and constantly busy but you will not be going anywhere in all actuality.

Not Taking Enough Risks
Simply put, the bigger the risk the bigger the reward. If you are willing to put yourself out there and be vulnerable, you will have so much more to gain than those who choose to blanket their lives with “security.” I love what Bob Parsons, founder of GoDaddy.com has to say about security, “Security is for cadavers.”

The truth is that real growth occurs when you get and stay out of your normal comfort zone. You only gain the most when you push yourself to do things you are uncomfortable doing under normal circumstances.

Giving Up
Unfortunately most people have been accustomed to giving up as being okay. If you are running a marathon and your foot start hurting, society teaches us that it is okay to stop and pull out because you foot was hurting. The question to ask yourself is; how can you ever win a race if you don’t finish it?

In reality, the last 20% of your effort typically gives you 80% of your results. You must keep going until you have accomplished whatever you set out to do. If you can only learn to get out of your own way and just keep going, there is nothing that will be able to stop you.

These seven reasons are what I believe to be the biggest challenges which stop people in living the life of their dreams and experience the beauty of all that life has to offer. If we can learn to overcome these challenges, and constantly push ourselves to advance further, all of the rewards are ours to gain and enjoy.

May your journey to your best be filled with success and happiness.

  9. myth November 25, 2011 at 8:04 am

I really enjoyed of your suggestion.Pretty good. But Confident and self determination with the God willings are so important for once personal success.I really struggled to come out from failures until I found the truth of God.Just having faith on God itself not giving fruitful life but need self effort as well.God create us in that way.Even if we are in the right trags as you mentioned 7 ways, but to succeed on those trags definitly need the support of God.Otherwise bad forces will make blockage on your ways or will make you stop from happening.Blind faith is ignorance and real faith is a wisdom of God.Believe my words. All from real of my experiences.

    Ashu my friend,

    Life is a gift.

You are here on this planet for a reason.

No matter how challenging your life circumstances may be, there are others in this world who are worst off.

Are you in health? Can you breathe? Can you talk? Can you walk? You have access to a computer? You have food? You have shelter? Say yes to any of these and you’ve got PLENTY to be thankful for my friend.

Just focus on what’s going right in your life and do the best you can every day. The rest is in God’s hands.

Try to be as positive as you can. Look for what you do have that others do not. Food, water, shelter, parents, those are all blessings from the Lord above. Read. Read as much as you can. Start with Think & Grow Rich, The Power of Positive Thinking, and How To Win Friends & Influence People. No matter what you think now, you CAN succeed – you just have to believe in yourself!

  36. Imran October 21, 2012 at 11:06 pm

Read as many motivational books as you can and watch as many motivational videos as you can on YouTube.

My parent divorce before i was born. I fail almost on any things i live in poverty since my child hood. i saw my parent died in poverty i have good brain and iam workholic but i was still caught in that never ending cycle of total failure

  41. Imran January 7, 2013 at 1:19 am

I completely understand my friend. Sometimes life seems totally unfair and it does not make any sense why things are the way they are… Just remember, after night, there must be day. The night is darkest before dawn. I too have never met my father. He left my mother when I was just a few months old. I just look at that like I will have the opportunity to be the best father to my children and define it on my own terms. Like a bamboo seed, sometimes when you do not see progress above the ground, there is a whole support system being created below the ground to prepare for a spurt of growth. Look at all the things that are right in your life…. Can you breathe? Can you eat? Can you walk? Can you read and write? There are a lot of things that you will find to be thankful for… Start with reading The Power of Positive Thinking and Think and Grow Rich. Keep me posted on your progress, my best wishes are with you.

since 2010 I started my youth sensitising program. I ve been searching so hard to get this information and at last i got it. I think I am the luckiest guy here. But with God all these challanges shall be overcomed. Thanks for sharing ur ideas with us

  51. joe March 28, 2013 at 4:44 am

What if I kept trying and trying for over 15 yrs and everytime I reach a point of success, everything goes wrong and falls apart, only to be back at square none. My actions are of an honest person, living by my good principles, integrity, trying to add value in every situation. I have work in high end projects with simultaneous demands and always work real hard to achieve great outcomes for me and all those around me. but it just seems that I fail because I end up being shafted, attacked, and ultimately failure; to be back to nothing.

  52. Imran March 28, 2013 at 12:49 pm

That means you are closer than others. What is the other option? To give up? I am sure we both agree that the answer to that question is NO!

There’s an analogy of a particular species of Chinese bamboo that’s very relevant to this conversation. When you plant this particular seed of the bamboo plant what happens for six months, a year, two years, two and half years, is nothing — you plant the seed you think that the seed is no good because it hasn’t popped above the ground you know.

Then what happens at two and half years is very interesting. In the next 90 days, this bamboo plant grows 30 feet into the year. What was happening this whole time while there was nothing visible above the surface, was that below the ground a vast network of roots were being formed to support this massive spurt of growth.

That’s how life can be sometimes, when there’s nothing to show, great things the right around the corner.

I encourage you to continue to take 100% responsibility of your life and your circumstances and know that success is here now and big things are happening very very soon.

  53. Alice April 10, 2013 at 12:51 pm

Things are not going all right.I am feeling much depressed in my life,so much that many times my mind develops a feeling of commiting suicide. What to do ? I scored less marks in class 12. Why do people determines character on educational qualification ?Why does not securing a good rank in a competitive exam means as if you failed in your life ? Why parents distinguish b/w their children just because one is intelligent and other is a duffer ? Why do people failed in any exam treated as now they can’t do anything ? Why does a successful man doing all wrong things become a hero in the society and a failed person who wants to do something right treated as villian ? Why people just run behind money ? My confidence is below zero. I also wants to successful person but I am without confidence. What should I do increase my confidence ? Now I am the best example in my family who defines word ”failure”.Once I was successful but now I am just like a night full of darkness without any ray of light.

  71. Shah July 25, 2013 at 9:53 am

I wrote on google search bar “most failed person in life” and as a result found your seven things. I was depressed and finding no clue where to go. Being out of job is a very bad thing. However, these seven things provided me courage and some clues – how to change the life and struggle. I hope reading such things change ones path or at-least provide solutions.

  72. Imran July 25, 2013 at 1:01 pm

Shah, glad you found the article helpful. Here is some more “fuel” for your mind. http://imranrahman.com/body-mind-soul-empowerment/

  73. A lonely soul August 12, 2013 at 7:38 pm

Everyone must remember that time is precious and continues to move without an end. For every person in this world, time can do miracles and can do things that no one can imagine. The secret is to manage that time for your own purpose. Only then you would be happy and lucky for the big change of your life. Everyone has it’s own star named destiny, you have to manage that this star never falls down. because then you are in a big trouble. Life is simple as that, live it till you can, because it could too short to live it.

  74. Imran August 13, 2013 at 1:42 pm

Well said! Thanks for sharing. And by the way, you are not a lonely soul. You are one with God!

all those descriptions above sound like obama who has failed the past 5 yrs!

  78. Imran November 7, 2013 at 2:48 pm

Republicans, Democrats, Bush, Obama, what’s the difference? Presidents come, presidents go.

At the end of the day, the only thing responsible for your life is yourself.

  79. Vincent December 1, 2013 at 5:02 pm

Dear Imran bhai Salam, your article is most logical , I really appreciate it , but when phase came of implementation, I forget it and continue do/think whatever I am doing in past. and unable to break past beliefs. Again Gratitude. May God Bless You.

I have been trying for years to find my purpose in life, no results, just failures and emptiness

  84. Imran December 11, 2013 at 5:50 pm

Cliff, your purpose is a decision and mission you choose, not one that’s given to you. Whatever you do that you lose track of time doing, would do for free, and makes you cry when you think about it IS your purpose my friend. Keep moving forward. It’s the only option. Imran

  85. chitra January 21, 2014 at 6:34 pm

    hello.. Imran Sir
sometimes we work hard but failed . people says that its all because of luck. Do u agree that Luck matters . I got a good job in a company and during training some students did hard work and some didnt.but after training hard working students are out from that company and the students who didnt do anything , are still working there.
Is it because of luck ?????

  86. Imran February 15, 2014 at 1:25 pm

Chitra, Luck is something your write yourself. Work has a lot to do with communication and confidence. Hard work is not the only ingredient, you also need to work Smart.

  87. Imran February 15, 2014 at 1:32 pm

Cliff, failure is not the end of the road. It’s just another checkpoint on the way to success. You gotta keep you head up, and keep going until you achieve what you are after. There is no other option when it comes to getting what you want. Your purpose is a decision. What makes you lose track of time? What puts you in the state of flow? What would you do for free? What brings tears to your eyes just thinking about it? That’s your purpose.

Sometimes people fail because of circumstances out of their control. This list makes it seem like failure only happens because of internal events and that external events have no effect whatsoever. This is false.

I’m “failing” because my research funding was taken away with the sequester. I can’t switch from a PhD to a MS because of my University’s policies. I can’t get the job I wanted in academia, and now I can’t get a job in industry either. So now what do I do? Your list is confusing. If I keep doing the same thing expecting different results, it would make me insane, and yet, I should further my education? Should I stay in school and do the same thing and expect different results?

The writer is one of many many people I see in the world around me that I am have recently become aware of. People who are successful think they have done something to deserve that success. They are LUCKY. And that is all they are. Plenty of people do the same quantity and quality of work as successful people and wind up jobless, homeless, depressed, etc. The only thing that separates winners from losers is luck because simply being smart and working hard is not enough, not when people are as greedy and entitled as they are in today’s world.

  89. Anon March 1, 2014 at 10:26 pm

Successful people don’t want to admit that luck played a role in their success. They want to believe that they worked harder or smarter than the next person. I would argue that luck is the biggest factor in a person’s success.

Well–What if your 48. More than likely you have a learning disability. Your slow in stuff. Takes you a littlie than most people to do things. Because of this–I can’t help but feel that I’m the adult child that most people don’t have the patents for. For the most part–I hate both my part time jobs. I’d rather be dong something else.
Going to therapy –most of the time–I -don’t think it’s working. I’m a pretty private person–not quite a recluse but close. So I don’t say to much, ak–Don’t really play well with others in this dept or example.
The few things I’m good at–really doesn’t get your foot in the door–in the job market. I Play guitar and write and sing. But I’m over 25. in that Dept—I don’t have any money right now to make anymore demos/finished product. Plus the show that destroyed music for awhile. American idol –doesn’ help either. If the creators– of the show–died and the studio blow up–that would make my year. I know, remember who may have played on what song or cd album–guest appearances type thing. (Not all of the of course), and I can find some friends stuff that they are looking for., Besides playing guitar–I like to write as well. But I don’t know anybody. So that’s it. I don’t really have any close, close friends. So unless somebody like me hits the lottery, I don’t really have to many choices. But with my luck–I’ll live to be 90, just so I can be miserable. I am suppose to have or take a learning disability test soon. —I do wish that most Home based business weren’t scams. But I really can’t sale anything to anyone face to face, Because I have that desperate look on my face and no one wants to see that. So again–I’ve got the failing thing down. Yes I know Henry Ford failed like a 100 times before he could get the light bulb to work. But he was smart. I was never good at school. For me it was like going to jail. You just got to go home every night. –But had to return the next day.

Tell Me After You Show this
How can i focus after seeing this ?

  93. Imran March 20, 2014 at 8:25 pm

Yes, you are totally right. I personally believe in past lives and Karma. That’s the only thing that explains why some are born farmers, and some kings.

Now, having said that, within your highway towards your destiny, you do get to pick the lane.

It’s not that external events have no affect, it’s that the way they affect you is up to you.

One person may get raped, then have a miscarriage, and be scarred for life and never really get over it. Another person goes through the same experience and becomes Oprah.

If your research funding was taken away, secure a different source. If you can’t switch programs, stick with the one you have. If you can’t get the job you want, start your own company and follow your dreams.

My list is not the ultimate end all be all list, it’s just a few things that once you’re on top of will make everything else easier.

LUCKY? You bet I am luck. I am lucky because I was born in Pakistan yet immigrated to America. I am lucky because I have a mother, family, and friends who love me. I am lucky because God’s blessed me with a kind heart and a sharp mind. Other than that, I create my luck my friend.

I have failed so many times, it’s not even funny. I’ve failed at everything you can imagine, and yet I just dust myself off and keep getting back up, you know why? Because that’s the essence of the human spirit and it’s evolution.

If two people do the same thing and get two different results, it’s not because of luck, it’s because of karma.

  94. Imran March 20, 2014 at 8:26 pm

Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. You write your own luck my friend. It’s not about working harder or smarter, it’s about destiny, one you write every day with each thought, feeling, word, and action in your life.

  95. Imran March 20, 2014 at 8:29 pm

Age is just a number. You are a soul. You were never born, you will never die. This life is just an episode in the series of your soul’s evolution.

Have you heard of Helen Keller? I am sure you have…

My friend, love yourself, be grateful to yourself, be compassionate and easy with yourself, accept yourself, forgive yourself.

Stop coming up with reason and excuses as to why things are not working. You’ve gotta follow your passions, believe in your abilities, and work as hard and smart as you can everyday.

Read The Magic of Thinking Big. I believe in you my friend, go get yours.

  96. Imran March 20, 2014 at 8:31 pm

25? You’re just getting started. You have your whole life ahead of you. Colonel Sanders who started KFC did so at age 51. Now a multi-hundred million dollar a year franchise. Here is what you do: Pick three companies who you would LOVE to work for, then send them an email saying you will work for them for free for 2 weeks as an intern to show your abilities. Get your foot in the door. Shake off the laziness and take different and new action.

  97. Imran March 20, 2014 at 8:37 pm

Success or focus is not required. It just helps to get what you want.

You can be a bum all day just hanging out and watching porn. How is that going to help the evolution of your soul? How is that going to advance your life? How is that going to give you the ability to financially help your parents and siblings?

You live in a world controlled by The Devil/Darkness/Evil. Yet God/Light/Truth is always there waiting for you as well.

At any point in time, the choice is yours to do what you want to do. Choose to listen to whichever energies you want to listen to.

If you want to watch that all day you can, or you can go out there, start your own business, and go after your dreams in life.

Sometimes, I feel every emotion, both positve and negative; whil at other times, my soul is the very picture of a desolate wasteland. I’m a balance of extremes. I know what I need to do to be happy, but can’t get past the shame of previous failures and maintain the effort needed to change my situation. While I am greatful for how much I’ve clawed my way through the dark recesses of my soul and pulled myself out of the muck and mire of personal doubt and fear… I feel as though all my willpower has been used to surpass that challenge, leaving a hollowed out husk to face a challenge I have been unable to surrmount… and just look at the challenges behind that with vacant, souless apathetic eyes. Belief in my Family, those few that I once called my closest friends, and humanity as a whole has been shattered, forged together, only to be shattered again by all involved including myself. I once had a purpose that burned so bright and so long, but it’s become cold lifeless ash that I’ve simply been unable to revive. I simply am without purpose and no longer have the capacity for a cause.

  99. Anita August 1, 2014 at 2:36 am

So… why am I still here? I’m an antiquiated relic who can no longer connect with the times, for I’ve come to despise the world I live in as much as I’ve come to despise myself for all the failures I’ve endured in the effort to change it. What would you suggest to a broken doll who once was her own champion… but now finds all the qualities that was worthy of campioning no longer exsist in herself?

  100. Imran August 22, 2014 at 4:23 am

Anita, I love your ability to articulate complex concepts so eloquently using words like paint and imagination like a paintbrush. I wish I knew more information about you to be able to more accurately offer suggestions. The most important thing I can share with you is to absolutely forgive yourself, accept yourself, love yourself, and honor yourself. Life works in Divine Perfection and you are exactly who you are supposed to be and where you are supposed to be. Lastly, in my opinion, everything is a story in your mind. Believe what you will. It’s up to you to tell yourself a different story about your future. The past, it’s history… but the future is still a mystery. You get to direct the story of your life, whether you choose to do so or not, time will continue to pass… Discover the best way for you to add value to others and serve… and just change the way you look at everything you want to see different in the world as being absolutely perfect and without need of any change. Life is. What we interpret it as is a perception. Choose wisely. Cheers!

  102. jk November 4, 2014 at 3:25 pm

Imran, your response to cliff hit it right on the head. (i just hope it didn’t hurt). all the same, you are right. the difficulty some times is when people are not ready to buy in to what you have to offer. at that pint you can be as passionate as ever but you keep seeing is failure. the remedy at this point is to keep working at it. keep trying. you are going to hit gold soon.

  103. Imran November 5, 2014 at 3:11 pm

Thanks JK. I hope so too. Absolutely, persistence always pays off, thanks for your kind words and all the best to you as well!
